Cat's claw, also know as Uncaria tomentosa and una de gato, is a vine from the Peruvian jungle. This plant has been used as medicine for over two thousand years by the Peruvian tribe, the Ashaninka. It is known by them as the "Sacred Herb of the Rain Forest." Cat's claw contains compounds called pentcyclic oxindole alkaloids (POAs) that have been shown to support the immune system, prevent cancers, and possibly treat AIDS. In Europe, the bark is combined with the AIDS drug AZT in some clinical trials.
The vine was named for the hooked thorns resembling cat claws on its twigs. Cat's Claw, or una de gato, is technically known as uncaria tomentosa
. Most herbalists and naturalists agree that Cat's Claw's benefits exceed all other known immune

. Cat's Claw Treats Cancer and Many Other Illnesses
There is much talk about cat's claw and its healing properties used for the treatment of cancer, but cat's claw can be used in the treatment of many illnesses. It is not just for cancer, but it is also used in the treatment of asthma, arthritis, gastritis, hemorrhoids, inflammations of the urinary track, kidney detox, healing deep wounds and bone pain. It is also used since the 1990's for the treatment of cancer, ulcers, chronic inflammations, and viral diseases (such as herpes).
Originally, Cat's Claw was used to effectively handle digestive problems such as gastric or duodenal ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, Chron's disease, Lyme's disease, and leaky bowel syndrome. Cat's Claw has demonstrated a capacity for flushing out pathogens and irritants from the gastro-intestinal tract.
properties have been useful for relieving the pains from rheumatism or arthritis. Cat's Claw is also useful for various fungal problems, including Candida. Cat's Claw's anti-viral qualities have been used for treating Herpes as well. Using Cat's Claw can benefit almost any autoimmune or inflammatory issues.Cat's Claw is an Adaptogenic Immune Regulator
Cat's Claw can be taken in capsule, tea, or tincture forms. It is an adaptogenic immune regulator. So it provides both immune boosting and dampening as necessary. Too much of an immune response does cause problems. For example, vaccinations often cause cytotoxic storms, an overreaction from the immune system that results in seizures or paralysis. Most allergies are essentially milder hyper immune system responses.
The converse is obvious. If the immune system is weak, disease can invade undeterred. So Cat's Claw can adapt to either situation as needed. It is also anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial (viral and bacterial), anti-oxidant, and anti-fungal. Cat's Claw has even shrunk cysts and tumors and it inhibits cancer metastasis.
In herbal medicine, Cat's Claw has been used to treat hormonal problems, such as PMS, CFS and prostate problems, and there has been some success in treating diabetes as well.
The POAs in Cat's Claw work by supporting the white blood cells (WBC). These are the cells that help with immunity. One of the functions of the WBC is to gobble up, and eliminate bacteria and viruses. POA does this by increasing the production of interleukin by the WBC. POAs also help a type of cell called B cells. B cells create antibodies against one type of virus or bacteria. After taking Cat's claw, research discovered an increase in the number of B cells. This is an important function, especially with new viruses mutating, such as Swine Flu H1N1.
Cat's Claw also helps the body create more T cells. T cells attack cancer cells and also AIDS viruses found in the blood stream.
Cat's Claw and Alzheimer's Disease
There are new studies being done on rats for the use of cat's claw on Alzheimer's Disease. The plant improves the immune system and prevents the deposit of beta-amyloid plagues on the brain. The tests showed that the mixture of cat's claw, rosemary and gotu kola
worked better than cat's claw alone. The researchers are hoping to begin trials on humans in the near future, but the results on rats show promise for the prevention of Alzheimer's Disease.
